چکیده

Cladding structures of photonic bandgap fibers often have airholes of noncircular shape, and, typically, close-to-hexagonal airholes with curved corners are observed. We study photonic bandgaps in such structures by aid of a two-parameter representation of the size and curvature. For the fundamental bandgap we find that the bandgap edges (the intersections with the air line) shift toward shorter wavelengths when the air-filling fraction f is increased. The bandgap also broadens, and the relative bandwidth increases exponentially with f2. Compared with recent experiments [Nature 424, 657 (2003)] we find very good agreement.

Simple geometric criterion to predict the existence of surface modes in air-core photonic-bandgap fibers.

We propose a simple geometric criterion based on the size of the core relative to the photonic crystal to quickly determine whether an air-core photonic-bandgap fiber with a given geometry supports surface modes. Comparison to computer simulations show that when applied to fibers with a triangular-pattern cladding and a circular air core, this criterion accurately predicts the existence of a fi...

Mode areas and field energy distribution in honeycomb photonic bandgap fibers

The field energy distributions and effective mode areas of silica-based photonic bandgap fibers with a honeycomb airhole structure in the cladding and an extra airhole defining the core are investigated. We present a generalization of the common effective area definition, suitable for the problem at hand, and compare the results for the photonic bandgap fibers with those of indexguiding microst...

Gas Sensor Based on Large Hollow-Core Photonic Bandgap Fiber

One concern in using photonic band-gap fiber (PBGF) as a gas sensor is the response time. In this type of the gas sensors, response time is the time required for gas to diffuse into the hollow-core. So considering a large hollow-core PBGF (HC-PBGF), the response time can be significantly reduced. But in the large HC-PBGF, the fundamental issue is the presence of higher order modes (HOMs). Somet...

Designing Hollow-Core Photonic Bandgap Fibres Free of Surface Modes

Hollow-core photonic bandgap fibres (PBGFs) confine light within an air-core due to photonic bandgap effects. Such fibres allow for a very weak overlap between the guided mode and the fibre structure, which paves the way for novel and technologically enabling properties, such as low nonlinearity, high damage thresholds and transmission beyond silica’s own transparency window [1]. Mid-IR transmi...

Air-guiding photonic bandgap fiber with improved triangular air-silica photonic crystal cladding

We introduce a small-core air-guiding photonic crystal fiber whose cladding is made of improved air-silica photonic crystal with non-circular air holes placed in triangular lattice. The fiber achieves un-disturbed bandgap guidance over 350nm wavelength range.
